Fruits of Diversity Community Orchard
Fruits of Diversity Community Orchard in North Portland was created by and for the community with the goal to provide access to fresh fruit to residents of the Tamarack Apartments, New Columbia, and other North Portland community members while also cultivating community leaders and educational opportunities to learn about fruit production. Village Gardens and Portland Fruit Tree Project collaboratively manage the project with support from Home Forward and East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District.
In February 2013, community members came together to launch this exciting new project, and began to collectively design the orchard. On April 6th, over 60 community members (including special guests, Mayor Charlie Hales and Home Forward Representative, Michael Buonocore) came out to help plant 18 new fruit trees and over 50 edible shrubs. An additional 7 fruits trees and around a dozen edible shrubs, compliments of a generous donation from City Farm, were planted 2 weeks later. In June of 2013, community members and orchard coordinators engaged in an intentional naming process for the orchard, and decided on Fruits of Diversity as the new name for the orchard!
Currently, the orchard is home to over 40 fruit trees, dozens of edible shrubs, and countless understory and companion plants and will continue to grow each year!
