There are tons of ways to give to Portland Fruit Tree Project. Find what’s right for you.

Join us in our vision of joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well-being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate. Your donation helps increase access to healthful food for Portland’s most vulnerable populations; reduces food waste; builds equitable tree canopy that is inclusive of all types of trees; and builds family wage work around regenerative agriculture and green jobs.

By donating, you are contributing to our work at the intersections of food justice, community resilience, and environmental justice and helping to build a stronger community and planet.

In addition to contributing financially, we welcome you to contribute through vehicle donation, choosing us as your Fred Meyer Community reward partner, adding us to your estate plans, or by providing in-kind donations to help us meet our mission.

Help ensure that every Portlander has access to culturally meaningful fresh fruit!

Become a Fruit Bud between April and June 30th and we’ll deliver (Portland Metro only, sorry!) a gift bag with cute products from Bambu Home, gift cards from local businesses, and more! Our thanks to you for your commitment to our mission.

Continuous support provides a stable base, making it easier to create sustainable programming! Thank you!

Portland Fruit Tree Project is not a Membership Organization. PFTP Fruit Buds are monthly supporters who provide an important, sustained source of income for the organization!

Business Giving

Sponsorships, team building, and more!

We are excited to work with the local business community to give back! While we’re open to ideas, here are some ideas that have worked in the past - talk to us about your goals and we’ll help find the best way to meet them in the service of Portland. For all inquiries, email info@portlandfruit.org.

Sponsorships:

  • Sponsor an Event - do you want your business name on some innovative, fun, far reaching events that also support a stellar organization? Look no further. Contact Kathryn Howard for more information. Ranges from $500-$10,000 depending on event and your budget.

  • Sponsor a Harvest - help us cover the cost of harvesting for a community member that can’t do it themselves. For $300 we’ll thank you at the event, provide shout outs on social media and in our newsletter, and you’ll get a tax receipt for your contribution. Contact info@portlandfruit.org for more info.

  • Sponsor the Sabin or Parkrose Community Orchards - community orchards cost $10k-$15k annually to care for and host approximately 100 civic minded, outdoor enthusiasts annually. Get your business in front of some of the most committed communities by sponsoring individual work parties ($250), or sponsoring a larger portion of the orchard space of your preferences. Contact info@portlandfruit.org for more info.

  • Have another idea? We’re open to creative opportunities! Contact info@portlandfruit.org for more info.

Group Volunteering/Team Building:

For our larger harvests, we would love to host your team! In addition to a great day of work (we can work with you on scheduling needs), we can offer team building professionals, educational opportunities, or more. Talk to us about your goals and we can discuss options. Fees for group volunteering help us cover the cost of harvesting as well as ongoing support to locations we work with and begin at $250. We promise you an event that will bring joy and a sense of having done something important that your team will talk about for years. Most team activities will happen at a community orchard site and could include mulching, harvesting, basic tree care, etc. based on the skills and interests of your group and what time of year it is. Interested? Talk with Tara!

Pro-Bono volunteer support:

If you are interested in having staff contribute time and skills, we’re open to talking. We are especially excited about marketing, fundraising, project management, and process improvement, but are open to hearing your ideas!

Workplace Giving:

We would love to attend your workplace giving fair and be on your list of organizations available to your employees! Wondering if your employer matches? Typically your Human Resources team will know!

IRA Contribution

TAX-FREE IRA DONATIONS – ANOTHER WAY TO GIVE

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN MAKE A TAX-FREE DONATION DIRECTLY FROM YOUR IRA?

An IRS provision allows retirees age 70 1/2 years and older to donate up to $100,000 tax-free from their IRA each year to a qualified charity, such as Portland Fruit Tree Project.

Generally, when you take a distribution from your IRA, it is treated as taxable income. Under this provision, the assets are excluded from income if the distribution is made directly to charity.

The distribution is not included in your income so you avoid all the effects that a regular IRA withdrawal creates, including taxes on Social Security benefits. Distributions excluded from income are also equivalent to a 100% deduction. Normally, charitable contribution deductions are limited to a lower percentage (or are eliminated altogether) for taxpayers who do not itemize and take the standard deduction.

GUIDELINES FOR DONATING IRA DISTRIBUTIONS TO A CHARITY

ELIGIBILITY

IRA account owner must be age 701/2 or older at time of IRA distribution in order to take advantage of this provision. Rule applies only to Traditional, Rollover, and Roth IRAs. SEPs and SIMPLE IRAs are generally excluded. Distributions of non-deductible IRA contributions also do not qualify.

ANNUAL LIMIT

Maximum amount of a taxpayer’s qualified charitable distribution must not exceed $100,000 per tax year and may include required minimum distributions (RMDs).

QUALIFICATIONS

Distribution must be made to a qualifying charity. Private foundations and donor-advised funds are not eligible. Portland Fruit Tree Project is a qualifying 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity; Federal Tax Identification 93-0719546.

DIRECT CONTRIBUTION

The IRA Trustee or custodian must make the distribution directly to the charity. Distributions made payable to the IRA owner and transferred to the charity will not qualify.

Taproot Society

Estate giving opportunities to support a better future.

By including Portland Fruit Tree Project in your estate plans, you make a commitment to fighting food insecurity and promoting food justice in the Portland Community. Your estate gift will ensure that as long as fruit can grow on trees, Portlanders will have increased access to high quality local fruit.

Bequests support our ability to provide and increase our services to a broader group of community members and allow us to invest in critical infrastructure, allowing us to thrive and fight food insecurity for generations to come.

We would be honored to speak with you regarding a gift in your will or memorial and honorary gifts.

If you are interested in making a bequest, please contact taproot@portlandfruit.org to discuss details.
