Indexing for Volunteers

This is a great volunteer role for people who like data, like to talk to people, and want to be a part of a community science project.

How you can help:

  • Do you have fruit trees? Check out being a DIY indexer!

  • Join an upcoming indexing outing - we’ll walk you through it the first time and you’ll be in with a buddy (feel free to invite a friend and do it together)! Dates can be found below, but will mostly be Thursday evenings through the summer to start.

  • Are you a GIS pro or enthusiast interested in helping with data analysis, story mapping, or something else? Connect with Tara!

FAQ:

Q: Do I need a smart phone?

A: We’d love it if you entered your information directly into the form, but if that’s not in the cards for you, paper is an option (tell us in advance)

Q: What does the shift/event look like?

A: We’ll pick an area of town that we haven’t been to, or that we are also scoping out trees for harvest or otherwise serves a couple of goals and provide you with a walking/bike route (if you have mobility accommodation needs, please connect with us!). Each shift is 2 hours long.

  1. Prior to the shift, make sure you have downloaded Survey123 from your app store (it’s free)

  2. Meet in a central location

  3. Talk through the day, hand out vests/supplies, and answer questions

  4. You and a buddy will head out to look for fruit trees in yards - if we have some harvests to scope out, you might get to talk to a homeowner to get in the backyard - this will be organized in advance and we’ll tell you about it!

  5. Knock on the door and invite the homeowner to participate by letting you collect the data or leave info on how they can do it - give them the information sheet to stay in touch

  6. Enter the tree data

  7. Meet in a final location to connect, share experiences, and hand in any materials.
