Native Bees for Beginners, and Book Signing Event!

  • Portland Fruit Tree Project HQ at Leaven Community 5431 Northeast 20th Avenue Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

Native Bees For Beginners is an interactive & family friendly learning experience at Leaven Community Center on March 8th. We will talk all about native Mason & Leafcutter bees and how you can support these pollinators right where you live. This is an incredibly special opportunity to learn directly from Pacific Northwest leaders in native bee biology, installation, and community food resilience.

🐝 Hosted by Bee The Change Landcare’s Carly Thomasset - ecological land steward and founder of Bee The Change’s Native Bee Stewardship Program. Carly works directly with homeowners to install and tend native bee houses for thriving, resilient gardens.

📚 Featuring Dave Hunter, founder of Crown Bees - one of the leading voices on native bee education in the Pacific Northwest. Dave will walk us through the fascinating life cycles of Mason & Leafcutter bees and how simple habitat shifts can dramatically increase pollination.

🍎 Joined by Kathryn Howard of Portland Fruit Tree Project - who will share how abundant pollination leads to healthier harvests and how PFTP helps get more fruit into the hands of our communities.

This will be fun, interactive, and welcoming to people with experience and total beginners alike.

What we’ll cover:

• The life cycle of native bees and how they differ from honey bees

• Why Mason & Leafcutter bees are powerful pollinators for fruit trees

• How to host native bees in your own backyard

• How healthy pollination strengthens our local food systems

• What to do with all the fruit that follows
